Thanks for that info geoff. It would seem that my suspicions may be right that the $11 million cutback to the rail contract is causing many of these problems.

The plan to introduce ten minute frequencies from February 2010 was cancelled as a direct result of funding cuts by NZTA to rail operations. SA sets 21, 22 and 23, while complete in October 2009, have been placed into storage as a result. Brand new trains, completed months ago, and they now sit in storage. The three locos that were going to haul them, were all prepared for service, at our expense, but have all gone back to the freight fleet and will no longer be coming to Auckland, even though expenditure was already incurred on them.

All going to plan, the greater frequencies will be coming on stream from June or July 2010, and will involve the three stored trains finally going into service. No official announcement made public yet, but word is that Huapai will be getting a 30 minute frequency rail service from the same time, during peak hours at least.

I think that's fairly likely to be a result of the funding cutbacks Luke. I think that delivery of some of the SA trains had been delayed, though the problem at the moment seems to be a lack of locos rather than a lack of carriages.

Just looking at ARTA's statement of intent from July 09 and they say there should be 10min peak frequencies on the Southern and Eastern lines by February 2010. It doesn't seems as though that has happened.
I guess thats possibly related to the several completed SA sets sitting around Westfield and Dunedin, along with the newly painted DFT loco.
Is this a result of the cutbacks as well?
